It’s Not Everyday that a President Visits Our Lodge

The history books tell us that James Buchanan, Jr. was the 15th President of the United States (1857–1861). He is the only president from Pennsylvania and the only president who remained a lifelong bachelor.

What they seldom mention is that he was a Mason and he was a member of Lodge No. 43. He served his Blue Lodge as Worshipful Master. Imagine that! Only one lodge on Pennsylvania can boast it is the Blue Lodge of a President of the United States – and that is our lodge!

So it was a special day when President Buchanan himself visited the Masonic Center of Lancaster – and Lodge No. 43 in particular – during our Open House on August 18.

President McKinley Explained Freemasonry

When asked of Masonry, President William McKinley explained,  “After the battle of Opequam, I went with the surgeon of our Ohio regiment to the field where 5,000 confederate prisoners were under guard.  As soon as we passed the guard, the doctor shook hands with a number of prisoners and began passing out his roll of bills.”

On the way back to camp I asked him, ‘Did you know those men?’

‘No’

‘But you gave them a lot of money, do you expect to get it back?’

‘If they are able to pay me back, they will.  It makes no difference to me; they are brother masons in trouble and I am only doing my duty.’

I said to myself, ‘If that is Masonry, I will take some of it myself.'”

Past Master James Buchanan attending Our Open House

Brothers and guests that are attending the Open House next Saturday, August 18, have an opportunity to have their photograph taken with not only General Reynolds, but MANY other local historical notables.  One of those visiting our open – CONFIRMED TO BE ATTENDING — President Buchanan.

As you know, he is the only Pennsylvanian to serve as President, and he was a master of Lodge No. 43.

Special thanks to Brother Patrick Clarke for helping to arrange the appearance of President Buchanan at the Open House. President Buchanan is portrayed by Don Walters.

Don’t miss it! Get your photo taken with Past Master Buchanan. The Open House is from 9 am to 3 pm.
